How To Set Up A VPN Connection in Windows 7

Author: John Lee

What is PPTP VPN?

Point-to-Point-Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a networking technology that supports virtual private networks (VPN), enabling remote users to access corporate networks securely. VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the VPN server, which will let you surf on the Internet with security.

We recommend you first try PPTP VPN, because this protocol is widely supported, very easy to set up and provides a fairly secure connection. If you experience any issues using PPTP, you can alternatively switch to IPSec or L2TP VPN.

Who typically uses a VPN?

More and more people every day are learning the importance of protecting their online safety through a VPN. Many companies use VPNs for secure inter-office communications and remote employee access. Now individuals can enjoy the same kind of security. Do you use your laptop to access the Wireless Network? If you answer YES to this question, you should use a VPN.

Can I use your VPN to replace my ISP?
No. VPN works together with your existing Internet connection to make it better and more secure, but it does not replace your ISP.

How is VPN different from a web proxy service?
VPN is much faster, work seamlessly with all applications, and more secure. A proxy works only with your web browser, whereas VPN secures all your Internet applications including Outlook, Skype and MSN. Furthermore, web proxies can be slow, unreliable and unsecure.
